What is the ideal CPA exam study schedule? This is a common question that many CPA candidates have as they embark on the long and grueling path of passing all 4 sections.
The CPA exam study schedule that we promote in our CPA study guides is based on a 30 day block of time. Candidates are required to commit 2-3 hours each day during the week and another 4-5 hours on the weekend. We have found that most students can pass the CPA exam in as little as 30 days. However, the schedule is strict because if you decide to take off a weekend and go to Las Vegas, you’ll have 12 hours of lost study time that you will have to make up. It is extremely difficult to make up lost ground when using a compressed study schedule. Image may be NSFW.

Another key point that I should mention is that not every section will require the same amount of study time. For example, many candidates schedule twice as much study time for the FAR section as the BEC section of the exam. However, coming up with a rock solid benchmark for a CPA exam study schedule is difficult because candidates vary so much. Some students have a broad educational history and only have to refresh certain concepts that were already learned in university. Conversely, some students have limited experience with Auditing concepts or current Regulations and need more time to study because they actually have to learn something new.
However, one of our mottoes is not to focus on the total time spent on CPA exam studying but rather focus on the quality of your study time. Listening to notes on your I-Pod while at the gym is not the same as taking an entire afternoon to sit in front of a quiet desk. A qualitative self assessment can help you determine the ideal schedule for the CPA exam.
