Total CPA Exam Study Time

One of the more common questions we get in our inbox is how
much study time is required to pass the CPA exam.

Most CPA study courses recommend the following:

FAR – 140 hours – 160 hours
REG – 130 – 150 hours
AUD – 110 – 130 hours
BEC – 80 – 100 hours

Every CPA exam prep course agrees that the FAR exam
requires about 40% more study time because the volume of
material is much greater than the other sections.

CPA study time includes lectures, making notes from the CPA
review courses, taking CPA sample questions, and finally
using CPA summary notes.

Thus, assuming that you have about 10-12 weeks of total
study time you will need to study about 10 hours per week
in order to pass each section of the CPA exam.

However, the study times will greatly vary from student to
student. The key determining factors are educational
background and work history. Someone who took mainly
accounting courses in university will most likely need to
study a lot less than a marketing major.

It is always advisable to use the stop watch on your cell
phone in order to monitor your total study time. I like to
pretend that I am billing a client and thus need to docket
my time in order to keep track of time. You can docket time
in 6-10 minute increments. As soon as you start a
distracting activity like checking your Facebook, you have
to stop docketing time. It is always best to be honest with
yourself as to how many hours you have actually studied for
the CPA exam. In my experience most candidates drastically
OVER estimate their total study time.
